New Barn School: British Values Statement

At New Barn School, we are committed to nurturing an environment where pupils can thrive both academically and personally. In line with the Department for Education's guidance, we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are integral to our school's ethos and are embedded in our curriculum and school culture.

Democracy

• We encourage pupil voice through our school council, where students are elected to represent their peers and contribute to decision-making processes.
• Our curriculum includes lessons on democratic principles and the importance of active participation in society.

The Rule of Law

• We ensure that our pupils understand the importance of laws and rules, both within school and in the wider community.
• Through our behaviour policy, we teach the value of responsibility and the consequences of actions, reinforcing the significance of a fair and just society.

Individual Liberty

• We provide a safe and supportive environment where pupils are encouraged to make choices and express themselves freely.
• Our personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education programme helps pupils understand their rights and responsibilities.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

• We celebrate the diverse backgrounds of our school community, promoting understanding and respect through assemblies, projects, and events.
• Our LFL education provides opportunities to learn about different faiths and cultures, fostering an appreciation of diversity.

Our Commitment

We take a global approach to learning by introducing themes from the perspective of other people in other countries.
